Angular Inaccuracies Cause Location Errors
The Dynamics of Angular Accuracy are not as easily recognized, as are some of the other geometric errors that are possible in a precision machine tool. Squareness errors can be seen as indicator "set-up" readings, taken when the work piece is being "trammed" into alignment. Machining of the front and back faces now shows an out of parallel condition, and pocket milling may show up as a parallelogram or a trapezoid. Therefore, during set-up of the work piece, angular inaccuracies or "wow" of the indicator may be explained away as a bad surface or simply ignored. This "wow" however may be a sign of the straightness inaccuracy of the machine, which is related to the pitch and yaw of the individual axis.
Minimal angular errors are critical for accurate positioning of the tool to the work piece, and as shown below the machine’s table, saddle, or column "follow" the inaccurate surface. Therefore the angular accuracy must be as small as possible to reduce the potential errors.
